Approaching an Audition
Though I have personal experience of attending auditions, I thought it wise to research approaching an audition to help enter the mindset of ‘audition mode’. In a basic theatre audition you are often asked to perform two contrasting monologues and to prepare one song that you believe best shows off your vocal range and ability. After watching various video’s on YouTube I have composed a list below of the top tips I think beneficial to my research:
- Pick a speech that brings a character to you.
- Don’t include any tricks, strip back and refrain from using accents, the director wants to see you perform.
- Use a new speech from a new play. This shows that you are reading current plays and that you’re interested in keeping up to date.
- Give it your all, you are basically trying to perform a whole play in 3 minutes.
- Find the gears within your speech – make sure that it has a beginning, a middle and an end.
- Know your speech inside and out – this will help keep nerves at bay and ensure that you are confident in your acting.
- Do some affirmations before you go in – ‘I can do this, I’ve learnt it, I’ve rehearsed it, I can do it!’ This will give your confidence a boost.
